Great Moments in Melt History – “The Melt Challenge.”
The Melt Challenge is a test of gastrointestinal fortitude; a monster grilled cheese featuring 13 different cheeses, 3 slices of grilled bread and a pile of hand-cut fries and slaw. Finish this 5 pound cheese-beast without any help (or trips to the restroom) and you will be immortalized in the Melt Challenge Hall of Fame.

This month’s “Great Moments in Melt History” looks at the episode of “Man vs. Food” that put the Melt Challenge on the national food stage.

“The Melt Challenge is ten years old,” says Melt owner and founder Matt Fish, “We created it June 1, 2007 on a lark. A Melt grilled cheese is big, so we wondered, what if we made it even bigger? The result was the Melt Challenge.”

Word quickly spread, and in 2009, the Travel Channel contacted Matt about a trip to Cleveland to feature the Melt Challenge on its popular show, “Man v. Food.”

The day the Melt Challenge was filmed, the restaurant couldn’t open for business until the kitchen footage was complete. “I think we opened about an hour late,” says Fish, “And it immediately filled up because word got out we were filming for ‘Man v. Food.’ Adam Richman is a very nice and humble person. We still stay in contact and will text each other every so often about food or Cleveland.”

When asked if Richman had any doubts about completing the Melt Challenge, Fish just laughs. “He played it up like he was worried but I think he knew that he would finish.”

“The episode definitely put us on an even larger national and international culinary map,” says Fish. “Our episode is still one of the most popular episodes of ‘Man v. Food’ and people still talk about it nearly 7 years later! The entire dining room filled with guests chanting and cheering was one of the best Melt experiences for me yet!”

Think you can complete the Melt Challenge? Give it a try! We’ll save you a place in the Melt Challenge Hall of Fame if you defeat the beast!
