Great Moments in Melt History – “Let’s Talk Turkey – New Bomb Turkey.”
November might as well be called Turkeyvember, because you can’t have November without turkey. This month, one of Melt Bar and Grilled’s most famous and popular sandwiches is back – The New Bomb Turkey.
“The New Bomb Turkey is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year!” says Melt Bar and Grilled owner and founder Matt Fish. It was first introduced in 2009 when Melt really started to focus on offering specific extra-awesome monthly sandwich specials. It’s been the November featured sandwich every year since.”
“The goal was to put Thanksgiving on a sandwich,” says Fish. “I definitely remember making the Thanksgiving leftovers sandwich the day after Thanksgiving. In my family, we hosted Thanksgiving each year, which meant having upwards of 20+ people in the house, relatives both local and distant, and tons of awesome leftovers for days. The inspiration for the sandwich definitely came from years of making the ultimate Thanksgiving leftovers sandwich, piling up everything that would fit on bread.”
And the name?
“The sandwich is named after the punk band, the New Bomb Turks,” says Fish. “My band, The Chargers Street Gang, played with them more times than I can remember and we became friends. Naming the sandwich after them was a funny tie-in to the local Ohio punk rock scene and the name is also a great conversation starter. Several members of the band have been to Melt over the years to indulge in the sandwich and singer Eric Davidson has made trips to Melt each November when he would return home to visit family for the holiday.”
The New Bomb Turkey can be made vegetarian and vegan so everyone can enjoy this festive holiday feast. “We worked hard to ensure we could offer an amazing vegan and vegetarian version,” says Fish, “and the sandwich is a beautifully orchestrated, delicious mess. We build the sandwich with more stable ingredients on the bottom and looser ingredients on top. If you add mashed potatoes, which I highly recommend, the sandwich becomes even more glorious and messy!”
“As good as the sandwich is,” says Fish, “I think the poster is just as awesome. The 2009 John G. poster, and the 2019 poster, are my all-time favorite New Bomb Turkey posters and might also be my favorite John G. posters. The original is the New Bomb Turks as turkeys playing a punk club. The most recent poster is a play on the Megadeth album cover ‘Rust in Peace.’”
Poster and sandwich can both be found this month only at Melt Bar and Grilled.
